The Play's The Thing

I think I 'll write a play.

What?

Yes. Why not.

You've never written  fiction in your life.

You know that and I know that. But those who read the play don't need to know that. Doesn't mean I can't. Shakespeare did  it.Fiction has to be real to be believable. A play has to be credible  to be enjoyable.

You are no Shakespeare.

That's true. A good thing too considering he's been dead for a while.

Some people would say Shakespeare is an anachronism.

You know that's not true   I know it's not true . People who quote Shakespeare all the time, know that's not true.

So what would your play be about?

Politics in a small Ontario town somewhere between Lake Ontario and  Hudson Bay.

Why do you think people would be interested in a play about politics?

Why would they not?

Because it's dull, dreary, pedantic and predictable.

You are dull, dreary , pedantic and predictable. I think I will write a play. It will be therapeutic. Not a Shakespeare type play. I don't want to depress people. It will be more of a Monty Python like  production. With my own stamp of course.

 Good luck.

You're being sarcastic.

Well yes. Put it  in your play.

  1. DO IT!!

Theatre Aurora will be sold out for a multi-night run!

Who knows, it might be even good enough to stage at the Cultural Centre, or maybe even Town Park!

Better start the planning asap. I wonder if those G20 fences are available for rent?

Also, must remember to seek a grant from Aurora. 5K ought to do it!

  2. We can't wait , but make sure you go back far enough to capture the freek show that was the last term. God knows there's enough material there to make Monte Python blush with envy.

  3. Please proceed with this project as I expect all us unwashed masses are long overdue in a trip to the The-"a"-ter.

Fiction would be a excellent departure for you and drawing on Python's Theater of the Absurd seems so fitting after what we have all seen here in town over the past 4 years.

Desperately looking to escape the backwater town of Snowball Ontario, your main characters could be inflicted with gross self importance and uncontrollable egotism.

The supporting cast features a mentally handicapped Moose&Mouse duo (both without names), a diseased Scottish King (Less Lear and more Layhey from Trailer Park Boys) , a crusty old witch that has no lines but appears on stage to hand handwritten notes to other characters and then disappear.

The play has an uphill battle in trying to achieve fontrum, but ultimately fails as the entire cast acts out their antics with an abundance of mediocrity and ignorance, only surpassed by the staggering level of hypocrisy.

Several wardrobe changes are required through the production. Makeup continues to be applied increasingly to the main characters and reaches a plastic effect half way through the show. The remaining half of the show the cracks are apparent and the faces melt off.

I see a Waiting for Godot type ending with the two main characters standing on a street corner waiving sighs and sipping champagne on the eve of an election they are unknowingly about to lose, all the while waiting for integrity to come, which of course never does.

An appropriate title could be "Culture : A snowball's chance in hell".
