Who Dat?

You're Wrong Again has left a new comment on your post "Who will buy...My sweet scented lavender":

"We don't even know how board members are selected. They don't even have to be from Aurora."

The Cultural Centre is presently seeking new Board members. You may find Qualification No. 6 to be of particular interest:

"We offer an exciting opportunity for community cultural involvement and are seeking dynamic members to add to our volunteer Board of Directors, for two year terms.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Related experience with non-profit Boards, committees, associations or other community groups as a member, donor, volunteer, or staff.

2. Transferable skills in one or more areas of Board governance such as finance, policy development, planning, legal, fund-raising, human resources, public relations, communications, volunteer co-ordination, etc.

3. Personal attributes of benefit to the Cultural Centre e.g. active contributor, team player, personal network, geographic location, problem solver, creative thinker, passion for arts, culture and heritage

4. Time and energy to contribute as a member and volunteer worker on committees, task groups, fundraising, special events and other activities.

5. Personal commitment to the vision, mission, program action strategy and the ongoing business of the Cultural Centre.

6. Must be a resident of Aurora."

I guess we can expect a correction, right   Posted by You're Wrong Again to Our Town and Its Business at 7 May 2014 20:54

A correction from what .....one might ask.I said we didn't know how board members are selected.
With respect...we still don't.

I've read the  bucket list twice.  Where is it published  ?  How is selection determined?

Are  "candidates " required to have all of  the qualifications?

Why is geographic location mentioned in  3. and  Aurora residence in 6. ?  Is it Option or emphasis?

Team player?  That's  an interesting one? Is there an interview process? Who conducts interviews?

How is their competence measured?

The list of credentials for volunteer board members raises more questions than answers.

Not  least  being why we are   Aurorans being taxed to pay for a program  so assiduously pursued by such a gifted and multi-faceted board.

Surely  such an assembly of talent , including "personal networks" anticipates self-sufficiency  and independence from tax support.

Under these circumstances , one might even expect a contribution rather than a drain on community resources .

To borrow a phrase "Corporate Welfare Bums" from the late and Honorable David Lewis, Federal  NDP Leader in the seventies. easily transferable to Cultural Welfare Bums in Aurora in the 21st century.

  1. I find the board of the Centre fascinating. As soon as there is a bit of a ruffle, the board gets changed and all previous information is denied:
" We do not keep minutes "

  2. There is generally an influx of new members prior to an election. It allows former board reps to move off discretely into other positions. ie Mr Ballard
We can expect several on the doorstep.
