Canada does deserve better...unfortunately only one third of the people believe that.

Aye. There 's the rub.
Canadian politics have been functioning on pure artifice for several decades now.
Since Paul Martin was left with the sponsorship scandals and paid the ultimate penalty.
Or since the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada was taken over by the religious right -wing
from Alberta.
Maybe further back to P.E.Trudeau. We gazed at our navels and debated ad nauseum whether Canadian Culture existed.
The leaders decided not and in the race to win immigrant votes promptly declared open sesame and
a multi-culture society.
Country Canada surrendered without a single shot being fired.
All the cultures of the world rushed in to fill the void created by our leaders to accommodate them.
Candidates were no longer nominated from the grass roots. They were parachuted in and appointed by party big-wigs to ensure the visibility of the highly visible.
There were other changes as well. Women and girls were murdered by male family members; husbands, fathers,brothers.cousins.
Bombs were planted in planes leaving Vancouver airport. Hundreds of travellers returning to visit
families were blown to pieces and scattered into oblivion.Nothing but a baby shoe or a favourite little
doll or blanky left to identify the victims.
Men wearing turbans were prosecuted in Canadian courts.
A former cabinet minister was brought back from a patronage post in Italy to face the music for the sponsorship scandals.
A Mayor of London Ontario, refused to resign is office despite evidence he paid for his son's wedding with a government cheque drawn against the department he headed as Minister of the
Crown.
More recently still a woman and girl child were spotted in a news clip going to a service for the mother and two sons viciously murdered by a violent husband. He was out of jail on bail despite
being in jail for brutal assault of his wife.
The victim was an exceptional human being who obtained two degrees while nurturing two sons despite living in appalling circumstance.
The mother and daughter clambering over snow piles to honor the victim were wearing great clumsy Canadian winter boots with straps flapping and puffy winter jackets over long cloaround their ankles
and heads wrapped in fabric.
The interviewee a Muslim spokesperson vowed murder was not what Muslim faith is about.
If it's not ,why does it happen regularly ? Why do Muslim women and little girls wrap themselves
from head to foot in cloth and cover ghemselves with tent-like garments when they are out and about.
Three murdered young girls and a young aunt were found in a car submerged in a lock near Peterborough. They wanted to wear western clothing. Their father and brother are in jail for their murder .
How many more Muslim women and girls will be murdered before it becomes the norm in our culture?
How much corruption does it take for a country's culture to be corrupted?

Apparently very little.
We are now seeing the current government waving the terrorism threat in order to become re-elected. We see Mr McKay pontificating about the threat posed by what was clearly a " lone wolf " completely off his rocker.
But the thing has traction especially in Quebec. The odds are that people will forget about neglected thalidomide victims, abandoned veterans of our warfare abroad and serious scandals on the home front and vote them in again.
It is all very cynical and effective.
The threat is not coming from outside the country for the most part. Too often, it originates with home-grown young adults of both sexes -mostly male - who have spent hours playing war games and reading internet garbage. Until we spend more on mental health and less on advertising and media fantasies ,we are all going to have to be very nervous.
numbers:-
$1,000,000,000 to host 20 world "leaders" but excluding riots and burnt police cars on Toronto streets. Dreadful images.
$28,000,000 in advertising to promote the War of 1812. Did we fight it again?
$376,000 for one-way trip Berlin-Montreal for suspected murderer/butcher
$50,00 to celebrate our flag's 50th anniversary.
Does any of this make sense?
Wow ! I was going to comment on the Newmarket Post Office being open on Family Day !
I think you forgot to throw in the kitchen sink but the gist is excellent.
There are no lone wolves. They run in packs. So where there's one... you won't have to look to far for the others. These "scandals" don't hold a candle to the scandals owned by the provincial liberals of this province. In fact, the Feds have to hurry it up with some serious scandals or they might not get a majority gov't.
19:54- nope it doesn't. The $50,000 is way too much.
I agree with more money to be spent on mental health. But not with anyone who is a terrorist. There is nothing we can do for these creatures.
19:54
the last number should be $50,000
Political Order and Political Decay by Francis Fukuyama
"The definition of the rule of law I am using in this book is not tied to a specific substantive understanding of law. Rather, I define it as a set of rules of behaviour, reflecting a broad consensus within the society, that is binding on even the most powerful political actors in the society, whether kings, presidents, or prime ministers. If rulers can change the law to suit themselves, the rule of law does not exist, even if those laws are applied uniformly to the rest of society. To be effective, a rule of law usually has to be embodied in a separate judicial institution that can act autonomously from the executive. Rule of law by this definition is not associated with any particular substantive body of law, like those prevailing in the contemporary United States or Europe. Rule of law as a constraint on political power existed in ancient Israel, India, in the Muslim world, as well as in the Christian West."
We seem to be governed by a rule of ideology and not a rule of law.
Laws are being created to support the ideology of one man, and do not reflect the broad consensus of society.
That is our curse.
21:27- I respectively disagree. I believe Laws are created to support the ideology of money.
"Three murdered young girls and a young aunt were found in a car submerged in a lock near Peterborough. They wanted to wear western clothing. Their father and brother are in jail for their murder."
The "young aunt" was 50 and the first wife (in a polygamous marriage) of the three girls' father, not a blood relative.
The lock was a part of the Rideau Canal located near Kingston, not Peterborough.
Their mother (Wife No. 2) was also convicted of the four murders.
Please dont forget there has been several brutal murders and assaults against women in this very town. Some like the one you wrote about, some not.The fact is we do need tofocus on mental health and in a big way.Aurora has had its share of brutal crimes; we just dont talk about it.

That's because Family is not a Federal Holiday.
20:28
I'm sure the same thing was said during the witch hunts. People really believed that nonsense and we have not progressed very far.
10:45 - How quickly you've forgotten the Toronto 18. One of the 18 had rented a storage unit up the road in Newmarket. His job was to purchase and store fertilizer. That was his "lone wolf" job. The other 17 had their specific roles in the terrorist plot. 1/2 of the 18 were Canadian born the other 1/2 were not. I think we've progressed very far from those witch hunts. We don't burn them at the stake anymore. Even though if we were taken by one or more of these terrorist... we would be.
14:14
Exceptions to everything. That was one that involved numerous people.
He ordered a movie shut down? Wow... how time has changed one or two things around here.
