I went to the barbecue at the United Church site yesterday. It was a cheerful gathering with music and friends
It was great to see people on the sidewalks of Yonge Street . A fire pumper was there and firefighters.
It reminded me of the annual buggy race down Tyler Street hill the volunteers organised .
It stopped when there were so many kids and buggies the race became hazardous.
I think it would be nice if the Farmers Market moved over and had a pumpkin sale on Yonge Street for Halloween.
I scooted up to Wellington Street . Stopped in at the paint and wallpaper shop. It really is a beautiful little store.
I think we might be having the same problem we had years ago with commuters leaving cars in available parking spaces while at work in the city all day.
Carried on up to the traffic lights and discovered why Gabriel's Cafe is never open when I'm there.
It' s only open for lunch trade.And for reservations.
Further on the sidewalk was utterly disgusting
It was a special day.
The community was invited.
They came.
I can not believe a business on Yonge Street would be so disconnected as to be so gross.
I crossed at the lights, scooted south and turned east at Mosely and south at Wells.
Last time and the time before in almost the same area ,I stopped to chat and the unmistakable aroma of gingerbread baking wafted around me.
I suppose it's possible that freshly-baked still -warm gingerbread with apple sauce and whipped cream might be the traditional Saturday evening desert in the same neighbourhood.
Or maybe Saturday was Scanlon's day...all day...to bake gingerbread.
Thank you. It was a lovely get-together. The side streets were jammed with cars. And the foot traffic was fun to watch too.
ReplyDeleteIn most European cities, there is a central parking area from which you can walk to do most of your shopping. Buses bring in those from the further areas who might not have vehicles. Aurora has neglected the parking part of an active town core. There is space available. A parking garage need not be exclusive. It could contain or be adjacent to other useful structures.

North American urban design has thrown out the concept of a downtown in favour of malls and strip plazas.
I hear those running for office talking about parking in the downtown core, but what they fail to see is the fact you need to have a reason to go there in the first place.
Unless, you need to go to a bank, lawyer or orthodontist, there is very little to drag anyone to the downtown.
I realize that there has been a few new ventures but their success is yet to be proven.

Library - has it's own parking area.
Cultural Centre - same
Farmers' Market - hardly in downtown - I park closer to GO station
Concerts in the park - same as Market
Restaurants - only patronize 1 or 2 - they are too expensive for middle of the road food - trying to be "downtown Toronto" but under achieving
Churches - sorry I'm a Druid

Wow…Just realized with your list 7:52, that’s a whole lot of money that the Town invests in the down Town core already.
ReplyDeleteActually, 13:23, it was 14:50's list of "historic core" (emphasis on core) attractions. It was in response to a stupid reference about "...very little to drag anyone to the downtown."
