ENOUGH OF THE SILLY STUFF

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "NONE SO BLIND":

Because, 09:21, *someone* needs to take a good hard look at the "owner and operator" of this particular kool-aid stand.

It's  not hard. All it takes is the tap of a finger and it's al there for anyone to view.

We have had enough nittering  and nattering about who is elite and who Isn't.

We all know silly snobbery when we see it. Condescension is easily recognized.

I accidentally removed a comment from someone who visited the Tait Gallery in London. I planned to cut and copy and lost it instead.

London has a myriad of galleries, museums, truly historic buildings ,horticulture gardens and  exhibitions

Centuries old buildings and palaces are everywhere for public viewing pleasure.

Old ones are treasured and spectacular new facilities continue to be built to serve the burgeoning tourist industry

The Tait Gallery is world renowned. Our commenter failed to provide information about whether the facility is free to all comers or who operates the business and whether or not  it is self-sufficient.

It's not the only aspect that makes Tait Gallery incomparable to Church Street School in Aurora.

  1. The TATE (of Tate & Lyle sugar fame) galleries do offer free admission (except for certain exhibitions). It is not self-sustaining, but has charitable status and does receive grant funding from the government.

So, not so different as you thought - it's all a matter of scope and scale.

  2. And the Tate Modern facility is actually in an old power station on the south side of the Thames in full view of St Pauls. Another former government building used for the "the arts".

I was the "commenter". Yes the Tate is free admission, however as the previous commenter says, special exhibits carry an additional fee. The other thing that was there - and there were a lot of them - was the ability to make a donation into glass box. The reccomended donation was 4 pounds (approximately $8).

This donation thing was not unique to Tate. I also saw it at the Maritmme Museum in Grenwich, British Museum and the Science Museum in Kensington. All of these facilities offer free admission.

  3. Yes, 15:58, those other three cultural institutions are also not self-sufficient. All are reliant on government funding.
