"Cowardice asks the question...is it safe? Expediency asks the question...is it politic? Vanity asks the question...is it popular? But conscience asks the question...is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must take it because it is right." ~Dr. Martin Luther King

GENIUS HE IS NOT

Sometimes It's hard  believe what we hear from American pundits. I know  the competition among journalists is fierce but honestly, when the fury reaches its peak, I don't think they even hear themselves.

For weeks now the donald has been the name of everyone's lips. Then, in amazement, they declare him to be a phenomenon.

This week he was declared to be a genius. Within hours the word was repeated umpteen times.

"He knows what people are thinking " they said. "He touches a chord and those people in Washington don't  have any idea what's going on"

What a parody.

Talking heads are framed in little square boxes; sometimes four, sometimes six. Each chosen  from a separate  segment of the political spectrum to ensure "balance"

No such thing.

Last we heard, the Ku Klux Klan is still alive and well  and on the march in America.

The donald  can  be easily envisaged riding down the middle of Main Street, white sheet billowing and hair flapping.

There's nothing phenomenal about that.

He's just a common -or -garden yahoo redneck with a weird hairdo.

In the sixties ,Enoch Powell, made a name for himself in British politics and beyond with similar schtick and Hitler mustachios to define his face. He also had a following. As did Oswald Mosley a couple of decades earlier.

To suggest politicians in Washington don't know what's going on is ridiculous.

In the first place, every politician in Washington comes from someplace else.

If Trump was elected ,he would immediately be "from Washingtion"

And every politician everywhere knows he is tapping into fears and ignorance that exists everywhere and always have

Everybody  knows it's there .  Responsible people know better than to stir it up.

Trump is no genius.

He's not even the quintessential product of modernity. He's old hat.

There is an excellent and interesting column on the Opinion Pages in yesterday's New York Times by Timothy Egan.

It is headed: GOOSE-STEPPERS IN THE G.O.P.

"Well, he's got the Hitler vote. The Neo-Nazi website, Daily Stormer, was out and proud earlier this week: "Heil Donald Trump - the Ultimate Saviour." After endorsing the Republican presidential front-runner earlier this year for his call to deport 11 million Mexican immigrants, the fomenters of American fascism have now added an apt twist to his slogan, one not far from the truth of the campaign: "Make America White Again."

Nazis - I hate these guys. Oh, but they're a tiny minority of pink-faced malcontents living in basements with the windows taped up. EVERYBODY hates them. Add to that supporters of the Ku Klux Klan, who've thrown in with Trump as well. David Duke, a former grand wizard of the Klan, liked everything he heard from Trump this week, embracing him for standing up for white nationalism.

The Republican Party is now home to millions of people who would throw out the Constitution, welcome a police state against Latinos and Muslims, and enforce a religious test for entry into a country built by people fleeing religious persecution. This stuff polls well in their party, even if the Bill of Rights does not." and on and on and on............

In the same edition of the NYT is an Editorial: CANADA'S WARM EMBRACE OF REFUGEES

"Many of the indelible images of the Middle East refugee crisis this year are haunting.

The simple but powerful words with which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada greeted the first group of Syrians resettled under an expedited program stood in sharp contrast to the misery and monumental injustice the earlier images represent.

"You are home," he said when the refugees disembarked in Toronto on Thursday after a 16-hour flight from Beirut. To a man holding a toddlers wearing a headband with flowers, he repeated the sentiment: "Welcome to your new home."

"We get to show the world how to open our hearts and welcome people who are fleeing extraordinarily difficult situations," Mr. Trudeau said during a brief speech at the airport. "Tonight they step off the plane as refugees, but they walk out of this terminal as permanent residents of Canada.."

The prime minister made no direct mention of Canada's southern neighbour in his speech on Thursday. Yet he spoke unmistakably to a broader audience when he said: "This is something that we are able to do in this country because we define a Canadian not by skin colour or a language or a religion or a background, but by a shared set of values, aspirations, hopes and dreams that not just Canadians but people around the world share."

ON WHICH SIDE OF TRUMP'S WALL DO YOU WANT TO LIVE?

I like that idea being floated that he is a Democratic plant but unfortunately he really seems to believe his destiny
is to be in the Oval Office. And last time Romney was scary enough for me !

Obviously William Shakespeare anticipated the existence of the subject of your post:

"Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing."

They're all scary to me. Including the ones on our side of the wall.

His family was originally from Germany and the family name was " Drumph " before it was changed.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, 12:19, he used to try to say that the family originally came from Sweden.

This is the craziest figure in American politics since Ross Perot.

French voters reject Front National, extreme right wing party.

"Early results show far Right party has failed to win a single region, after voters flocked to traditional parties to keep it out following first round victories.

The far-Right Front National was thwarted in its bid to clinch a historical electoral victory in France on Sunday after failing to secure power in any of the country's 13 regions, early results suggested.

The ruling Socialists of President Francois Hollande appeared to have fared better than expected, taking six regions, while the opposing centre-Right also took six, including the Paris region for the first time since 1997.

Voting had taken place under high security with France still under a state of emergency exactly a month on from the jihadist attacks in Paris that claimed 130 lives - a climate that helped the FN reap historic gains in round one a week ago.

But in a major upset, Marine Le Pen, the FN leader, failed to take power in the northern region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, losing heavily to Xavier Bertrand, the candidate of Nicolas Sarkozy's centre-Right party The Republicans."

The Telegraph

The French, while displaying public stupidity when alleged to be supporting political candidates and parties have somehow come to their senses and turfed the far-Right into the trash where it belongs.

Let's see if the Americans are able to do the same during their primaries and in the general election almost an ungodly 11 months off.

Did he mention that the old man was a member of the KKK ?

Anonymous said...

Those are pretty nasty allegations. And you know this how?

Anonymous said...

Which, 11:07 ?
Mr Trump's family name ? Actually it was originally Drumpf. That is old news. Any of the news sites will have it in their
stored materials. He might have been wiser to claim it was Austrian. The Suedes caught him out immediately.

16:15 - No. That his "old man" was a member of the KKK. I am no Trump fan, but I have a real problem with those that want to dig up shit from someone's family history. Have people forgotten that many from German decent hid the fact that they were German after the war. Many Jews tried to hide that they were Jewish. Nothing new there folks! Now...the fact that his father got swept up at some KKK riot parade means nothing. No charges were laid. Let me remind you of all those that were corralled in cages like cattle with no food or water in the G20 Summit 5yrs ago, right here in Toronto. Why? Just because they were in the area. How many innocent people 5yrs ago got finger printed with a mug shot, forever being in the archives of the police? Guess we'll find out when one of those people want to become a politician or someone famous for something or other.

11:16 - It is kind of different from the KKK, hiding that one had Jewish blood after the war. Those people had been hounded
across a continent and were still terrified. Much like what is occurring today.
If the raid were the only red flag , I would agree with you. Unfortunately, there are others including the refusal to rent
property to blacks. [ And that too was common for the time ].
I just wish the son were not running based upon his own personality though. He is frightening. Americans deserve better.

Mr Trump took a hit over the past few days. A Scottish court ruled in favour of a wind farm over this golf course.
