What American state would ring your chimes?

I've never had a particular urge to live in the United States.
As a nine year member of the Social Assistance Review Board, I visited every part of Ontario,
Many hours of driving tended to be tedious. Every town and city shares similar features . Not
surprising considering the function is the same.
Some, like Desoronto had a single fine block on the Main Street ,then a highway had cut
the town off, to sit with a single high sky line for the rest of time in a state of arrested development.
Hearings sometimes had to be held in homes. An old farmhouse deep in a rural area with broken linoleum on a kitchen floor. A flat over a gas station in the fork of a highway. A dark basement flat in Richmond Hill. A foul smelling cabin on a horse farm on Yonge Street south of Aurora.
In Windsor, we stayed at Hotel Richelieu on Wyandotte and walked to the office in the morning. Sometimes the long way, along the riverfront, to avoid the reflected heat of a glass-fronted tall
buildings on the sidewalk.
On one occasion , a board member hoping to score brownie points suggested a cheaper hostelry
further up Wyandotte. It had a tavern on the ground floor with musical entertainment competing with yelling patrons. The old rattling door to my room was loose in its frame with a lock that failed to hold.
I didn't sleep much that night. Didn't stay there again.
In noisy, shuddering small planes in northern Ontario ,we crossed thousands of miles looking down
on frozen wilderness. It occurred to me on one of those flights, thinking about my children, government
carried no life insurance on SARB members.
At the start,we had to pay for our own phone calls home while the government had a call free phone service.
It wasn't the best time in my life but as a single parent I had little choice.
I let myself ponder ,if I won a lottery of millions ,and could live anywhere of my choice and take all
of my children with me ,where would it be in Ontario?
I never thought about the U.S. I never thought about leaving my children.
I made two moves in my life and left family behind. I was young. Inexperienced. Knew of no reason I shouldn't.
Twice was enough.
ReplyDeleteThe latest American polling data shows Trump and Clinton in a virtual tie.
Public opinion also describes the two front runners as the worst candidates in five decades.
I fear for the next four years.
Wonder what Charlie Rose has to say about the above?
I wouldn't move anywhere south of Bloomington, let alone anywhere in the US. Fortunately my family feels the same way. NOrth would be the only option for me.
ReplyDeleteFunny.... no one will move anywhere. The grief encountered during a move is significantly higher than that of any politician taking office.
ReplyDeletePeople like to protest with hollow threats - no one is going to move because of Trump.
My immediate family has chosen north and the last one will move there in the next month.
ReplyDeleteOthers have gone west, one to Kamloops to teach at the university.
People are on the move, They have to be.
Cold spell coming - don't risk planting and get whacked.

ReplyDeleteThere does seem to be more talk about relocating than usual. I am hoping it will not have to be taken seriously.
Trumph scares the heck out of me because he is a law to himself. The refusal to release his tax info is
arrogance unleashed.
I don't care how much or little any of them make, as long as it's legal. Handing over personal tax returns is non of anyones business.

ReplyDeleteHe is being audited which means nothing or something.
If his name turns up in the Panama Papers, that could shift the focus.
Quebec needs and wants more immigrants. Others have come and dealt with their language laws in the past. It is possible for young people to make the adjustment. Later they can move on to another province if they so desire.
