"Cowardice asks the question...is it safe? Expediency asks the question...is it politic? Vanity asks the question...is it popular? But conscience asks the question...is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must take it because it is right." ~Dr. Martin Luther King

It's Stupidity you have to Worry About...Not Corruption

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Pomp and Circumstance":

Since the Town of Aurora is great at providing such sweet deals to groups like the Rangers and the CC. How about some sharing with private businesses.

******************************
Development charges are set by Bylaw . Come to think of it I do not recall an exemption to the bylaw being passed by concil to allow an exemption from fees for St.Andrew's College.
.
The College is private business.  The fee   is supposed to be deferred  until the property sold. What a bunch of bafflegab that was.  I 'd be surprised if the agreement is registered against title of the property.

I noticed recently  the Salvation Army  will also be exempted. It means Aurora taxpayers  will make a  charitable donation  to the value of tens  of thousands of dollars to the Sally Ann

On the other hand, during the Mormac administration  the Separate School Board  had to pay development   levies  for a permit to construct St Maximilian Kolbe High School.

No other  municipality in the Region does that. The board gets its revenue from taxpayers In effect, Aurora taxpayers were paying  the town a development levy  to build a school to serve the taxpayers within the municipality.

The  town  guessed the value of the property and  charges were calculated accordingly.

The Board appealed  the figure to the OMB and won the appeal .

The town had to refund thousands of dollars plus pay  legal fees to fight the appeal.

Nothing was accomplished in the interest of the  town'.. A goodly portion of the.levy was swallowed up in
utter stupidity of the exercise. The motive ? I would say,  empowerment  referred to in a comment.

The  administration were well aware of  all that when St. Andrew's asked for a waiverof the fee . It was their job to advise Council of precedents and implications of disregarding town.legislation.

They never did.  The decision was  enabled by staff.

Of  course  it  might have made no difference. They  are such a bunch of no-mind suck-ups. Logic has no place in their scheme of things.

Integrity  and equity are merely  old-fashioned concepts. .

The obvious question is why they do stuff like that?  It  would be reasonable to be suspicious. .

But no ...what you have here are people with no sense of politics' People who believe  being  elected  is   about empowerment.

It is not about keeping faith with the people who elected them. .

As the saying  goes:

It's not corruption you have to worry about. It's stupidity.

Could you please redo this post as it comes out with tiny letters in some spots and normal sized ones in others.

I do not have a microscope.

Thanks.

It's awfully hard to read that. I think from what I did get that we support a lot of different groups without really informing residents. And I did not see the Food Pantry on the list even though that might receive some approval if it were a modest amount.
