"Cowardice asks the question...is it safe? Expediency asks the question...is it politic? Vanity asks the question...is it popular? But conscience asks the question...is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must take it because it is right." ~Dr. Martin Luther King

Sorry About That

**************************

Sorry about that. I found the item in  the regular newsletter of BILD.

The Honorable is recently elected to the Provincial Legislature  and eager to show his mettle. At the same time  clearly showing he learned nothing as an alderman and Chairman  of the Planning and Growth Management Committee of the City of Toronto.

The item is particularly relevant for potential of an application from a potential new owner of Highlands  Golf Course.

According to a  recent quote I the media,   a Councillor has suggested the town should buy the golf course.

One thing is not simply potential. From the day  the golf course was last purchased and before
the value of 98.8 acres of land within an urban developed area has been well understood.

When the evaluation is/was made , it will be done on the basis of  potential numbers of units
to. be built on the land.

It is not raw land. It is surrounded by municipal services

To contemplate  purchasing a golf course as a  golf course is wishful thinking at best and  at worst
the same level of competence as the Honorable Peter Milczyn . Frightening.

Add to the price, forfeited lot levies  and assessment revenue , which is the business of the municipality, cost  of  purchasing  Hjghlands Golf Course is out of the question.

That  it is cited as a possibility by a town official  is at best unbelievable.

At  worst , Ontario Ombudsman Andre Marin might wonder at which  meeting the matter was discussed for such an idea to surface.

That golf course has been in trouble for years. Each fall when the carts were hauled away, there was uncertainty if they would be brought back the next spring. It is not a viable business,

There must be some future in golf as the American president just played a round with the recently retired New York Yankee All-Star, Derek Jeter.

Wonder if they discussed housing?

Councillors have suggested that the town purchase other properties, We have been able to shoot most of those schemes down & can do it again.
Me, I envision [ love that word -not ] an enormous leash free, smoking, bonding area for years while this gets sort out.

If anyone is entitled to the honorific "Honourable" it is you, for the honour you have brought to public affairs over a forty year career.

To see this word used before a complete prat's name rankles.

I must have missed that article. Are we allowed to know which councillor suggested buying the golf course ?

Well Highland have their own Ratepayers' Group now. Hopefully that means the town will not be stuck with any & all court costs as they move on.

12:47- Glenway had their own group as well, lawyers and all. The Towns cost was close to the $1 million range.

Glenway ruling is out. 700 new residences from what i can figure. Not knowing the site, I cannot comment on the amount of green spaces.

9:22-I love the way the Error reports the facts. They print "more than 700 units", but for some reason they don't want to print or can't get the factual amount. The last amount amount of units that were proposed was 730, but I believe its now 742.

That is why I give the source. Much more interested in Highland. Found a town map from about 10 years ago and am having fun playing with the depths of some fairways. Judging from the initial rhetoric at that meeting there are going to be the same sort of non-negotiators here. I just hope they are out-numbered by those who really mean to work with the future owner.

We live just around the corner from a part of that golf course. There is no shortage of " green " space around here. Some of those houses have space for 3 of us.

The timing of the Highland sale ? could not be better. Any member of council who rolls over like a puppy will have to deal with the consequences for the rest of the term. There is no need to rush into stupidity.

Consequences? What consequences? Council members will vote to fork out the money to go to the OMB, knowing they're going to lose. When they lose council can just say to the residents, "we did as you wished. Sorry but we lost". Council will act angry, disappointed, talk about how the OMB needs to be changed, blah, blah, blah. The residents need to be smart. Development will happen. Work with the development.

Alison has an excellent column on Ratepayers' Groups that all the Highland residents should read before they move too fast in the wrong direction.
