Newmarket River Walk made the news on Channel 4 to-night. Cameras were there to cover Newmarket's Olympic event.
A huge outdoor flat screen, an ice palace and outdoor contoured lounge seating to relax and watch the events in Sochi.
Newmarket has a couple of Olympic athletes in the competition . We wish them luck.
The River Walk was an issue in the last election.
The facility was created in the parking lot behind stores on the east side of Main Street.
The situation is interesting from an Aurora perspective because of certain similarities.
It was the demolition of the old arena that triggered imaginative re-use of the downtown property.
Residents are fully appreciative of the new amenity. It has already been enjoyed for a couple of years
and there's still almost a year to go before the next election.
Council has every reason to be satisfied with their work.
The question of conflict has been raised re a town bid might be used to force up the price of the Stronach parcel designated to accommodate 92 homes on forty-foot lots.
Fat chance.
Our Council's decision on the old surplus buildings on Library Square remains to be made.
A Memorandum on Tuesday's Agenda , dealing with real estate at the north end. is:
the previous memorandum be received.
A motion to receive means no action recommended .
It's complicated. But not.
If Council accepts the recommendation , no further action ensues.
It seemed to be leaning that way.
But direction to negotiate prices was contradictory.
If the recommendation is accepted, the matter is closed.

Thank you, Evelyn. I really didn't think Aurora's entry into the real estate market would create waves. Sort of like a dingy in a vast harbour.
Newmarket has been working on their town for years, just doing what they could afford along the way. Sometimes it was painful as when the main street was a mess for simply ages & storefronts suffered. In Aurora zip has been done fix the core - it shows . And we lose just as many businesses with nothing to show for it in the end.
I wonder if Cllr Ballard will be on hand over the weekend to explain why he moved that the Works Depot be given the platinum standard in roofing.
We are giving it a miss despite the ' personal ' invite.
The River walk did NOT help the downtown retailers.The parking is a joke.Concrete everywhere and areas that are nothing but wastedLike our downtown they have parking issues to the North.But....the condos are coming.

I still haven't figured out where the motion to negotiate prices came from. According to the CAO, that was ' all ' the proponents desired. Brought back memories of another off-note motion in the middle to the Centre controversy.

It would be great if a petition were not needed. There has been talk about how to get the kids to earn community service points by running it around but I think it's going to have to be done by adults. Otherwise there might be someone who could find fault.

23:50 – At least it created something that many in Newmarket can enjoy. In fact I know many in Aurora use it as well, and while they’re up there I’m sure spend their money in Newmarket whether it’s in the down town core or not. This “heritage park proposal” in our down town is a colossal joke. I’d rather see it as a dog park where so many more people young and old would enjoy it.
Anyone could have a crack at writing a petition to oppose the Heritage Park. It probably would not matter if there were several versions floating around.
If needed.
There might well be some supporting the notion.
That would be okay too.
