"Cowardice asks the question...is it safe? Expediency asks the question...is it politic? Vanity asks the question...is it popular? But conscience asks the question...is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must take it because it is right." ~Dr. Martin Luther King

Chris Watts Latest

Chris has a post this morning about fire protection in Aurora's Lost Museum.
And  inappropriate use of the building.
I remember the recommendation  to install the system.  The President of the Historical Society was on hand to answer  questions.
The system, we were assured, was designed for museums.. Water would not be used.  Artifacts would not be doused.
When the Farmer's Market was located on the second floor of the building I questioned that too.
The rooms  are posted with weight capacity. How would it be determined the market was  within  posted capacity?
The answer was vague but apparently my concern was not valid.
I didn't know then  cooking was going on in the building.
I don't need anyone to tell me the effect  ofthat on fire insurance premiums. If the policy does not reflect cooking, insurance is not  valid. The building is not protected.
Something else concerns me . Despite  massive investment, the floors  are  authentic and original. When a building has  been adopted as heritage and eligible for grants, authenticity is a requirement.
The floors been sanded and polished but they are still the old floors. Boards have shrunk. I'm told the amount of dirt lodged between them was humungous.
It  seems  a floor so old  should be gently used and protected.
Winter location for a farmers market ,with  foot traffic and salt laden boots  never seemed like good stewardship to me.
I was the only one who thought so.
So from my perspective, once more with feeling, the only solution for these and all  other problems identified  is for the town to be  looking after  the building.
Although it's not a hundred and fifty years old, for the Sesquicentennial, Aurora's  blast from the  past should  be restored to its rightful home.
Jewish people have a  farewell sentiment;
  "Next year, Jerusalem"
Aurora Friends of the Museum should adapt it;
 "Next year, the museum"
The decision on the  agreement will not be made until  mid -January.
Dicken's  Christmas Carol  is being staged at the Museum
Given the limited accommodation, it will be enjoyed by a small group
Sort of like Hillary House residents entertained  a few friends  to balls in the ballroom  and tennis, croquet  and garden parties on summer Sundays.
Actually, befitting their station in life, I suppose they could be  socializing   any day of the week.

Two comments.....

1. You express a concern of how cooking will impact fire insurance premiums but you continue a lawsuit against current and former councillors whose defence will be covered by the Town's insurance. You don't seem to be worried about those premiums.

2. Why does the Culture Centre or Hilary House debate filter down to a "class" issue? Why is culture something that you think only the "befitting their station" enjoy? People of all stripes should be able to participate - maybe they do, you just don't know because you have a pre-conceived notion.

Re: Comment No. 2

It's all about 'reverse snobbery' - totally unfounded in this case, but it is one of Cllr Buck's preconceived notions, as you say.

There is no impetus or will to respect the building. They do not own it & have no feeling of responsibility. If something goes wrong, as it will inevitably occur, Aurora will be left to pay the freight.

There you go again, trying to put residents into convenient little boxes of your own antiquated design. In Evelyn's post, she was quite clear in her reference to earlier entertainments at Hilary House. If there really is a parallel, you jumped right into her analogy.

Geez, if it's really that bad, maybe the Town (once it acquires the Aurora Collection) should remove it from the building as soon as possible.

I think everyone in town would be a whole lot happier if town staff had some say over how that building is being utilized. But that is not going to happen any time soon. Reminds me of a dog with a bone.

Congrats to 12:44...

Well done, the topic was ACC and Hillary House and you have successfuly blocked that topic and steered it back to Morris and how bad she was.... even when the topic has nothing to do with her, someone here has to bring it back.

It's like The Godfather sequel when he says.... "Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in"

Talking to yourself again? Who mentioned Morris?

Councillor Buck,
I love the farmers market, but, I too, don't think it belongs upstairs in the Cultural Centre. With so much vacant warehouse and unused retail space in our town, possibly even the old library would be a much better choice. I bet we could get more vendors if a more appropriate location is used. I know alot of folks in town that think the same. Keep talking please!

If you read all of the blog, you would understand that 12:44 was a posting that was removed. Of course the moderator of this blog confuses things by removing an offending post but leaves all of the references to it. Might as well leave things alone.
