It's an expression of  exasperation  when  a discussion of town affairs is  so reduced.
Like... "Yah, your mother wears army boots"
It 's hard to resist the  temptation  to  pick  up and hurl back .  
There's no shortage of material. 
When  reason runs out  and  name calling and insults are what's  left, the underbelly is exposed. 
In a  public exchange, it's the only thing that strikes me dumb.
Shooting fish in a barrel is not sport. 
In a blog however, the sharper the blade, the cleaner the cut. 
I've  never claimed the patience of a saint.
