The family grows. The fifth member of the third Canadian generation , a girl child, has arrived. The grandchild of my first born. A week after his birthday.
Her name is Isla Mary Buck.
Two more are expected. One in December and another in Spring.
Cheyenne and Abigail will have a new sibling . The twins, Reid and Claire in Takoma Washington will also add a member.
Isla Mary came a week early, weighs 6 pounds, seven ounces and measures eighteen inches long.
I expect they will know their great grandmother. Perhaps not well.
but well enough to be more than a hazy memory.
About the time of her birth , a dozen or so "tablets" were given to a group of small children in Africa who may never have an opportunity to attend school.
Within five minutes, one discovered how to turn it on and showed the rest.
Within days. they had learned the alphabet and how to write.
At the time of viewing the feature on television, they were singing the alphabet, full of laughter and joy.
In a hut with bare feet and a dirt floor.
It confirmed an impression I have had since my own children were born that given opportunity and encouragement, children will learn from their environment more than they learn from adults.
About the same time Isla Mary was born , the United States of America was in the process of re-electing a Democratic President who happens to be black.
Billions of dollars were spent.
Something was re-kindled that had threatened to be doused.
A flame giving hope for children the world over
That they might have an opportunity to grow and learn .
Free from hunger and want.
Free from war.
In so doing, the world might become a better place for children like Isla Mary Buck and her cousins.
