"Cowardice asks the question...is it safe? Expediency asks the question...is it politic? Vanity asks the question...is it popular? But conscience asks the question...is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must take it because it is right." ~Dr. Martin Luther King

More History. 1970's ?

The town signed a contract with the Ontario Humane Society for Animal Control. A lot was sold  to the Society for a shelter to be built for the nominal sum of $5,000.
When the time came to renew the contract, the price increased substantially. Questions were asked. Answers were not provided.
The Council hamner was inundated with financial donors  of the Humane Society in support of  Managerial demnds substantially ore money.
We heard at the time ,even the Premier of the Province was unable to obtain information about the financial status of the Humane Society.
Romours were rampant about the high life style of the manger..
A Councillor a an executive member ofthe local branch of the Humane Societyy. Even he knew nothing of finances.
As a private not-for-profit corporation ,the Humane Society answered to no-one for their finncial operation.
The town cancelled the contract. A private group, Kennel Inn offered a service . We went with that.
For several years they endured regualr harassment from the Hmane Society. They provided twenty-seven  years of satisfactory service,
pidtaxes to the town and provided fourteen jobs.  .  .

When we lived in Richmond Hill, the Kennel Inn found and returned our aging big old mutt 3 days after she bolted after a fox. I had believed her well past that stage. She didn't even have her collar & tags on. There was no change- just a well-deserved lecture. The driver accepted only enough money to buy a beer with his lunch.

The Humane Society has blotted it's copy-book far too many times. It has cost them dearly with people who were inclined to include them in wills.

Another fond memory of the good job done by Kennel Inn. Several times our golden retreiver would go missing from our rural front yard. We would get the call from Kennel Inn to come pick up our dog. Seems every time they would drive by our property, the dog would come to greet them at the end of the drive. When they opened the van door, she would jump inside and would not get out unless they took her for a drive!
Again, at first, no charge, but then it got ridiculous. This kept up for years. Eventually they wanted to charge us because she was not secure on our property. We just asked that they stop opening their door! Miss them.
