"Cowardice asks the question...is it safe? Expediency asks the question...is it politic? Vanity asks the question...is it popular? But conscience asks the question...is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must take it because it is right." ~Dr. Martin Luther King

Filling In Some Blanks

Don't forget some of the other "players" in the neighbourhood at the time. A certain Mr Granger lives in the 'hood as well as the former CAO (now since moved away) Mr M N

The issue was not the access to the land but the enevitable increase of traffic as the two major north/south streets in the area became conduits to Bloomington or Bathurst.

The house was quite a structure. It included an indoor swimming pool and was situated in a stand of trees.
**********************
I didn't forget the other players. I never knew them.
I was fairly certain though Council wasn't guilty of what they were  accused.
It was then the enmity began between the old and the new and just grew and grew from thereon in.
I don't see how  traffic could  have increased to such an extent as to be a serious problem.
Thank you for filling in some of the blanks.

This is all really interesting. If they hadn't blocked those roads, other arterial streets such as Kennedy Street West might not have such a problem with traffic. It could have been shared throughout the town. Is there anything to stop that developer from finishing his plan up near the water tower? Aurora could keep the High Tor land and use it wisely and the Region would hold the water tower land. We get a large park area with some control, the developer gets his homes and we finish off those streets as they were designed. Traffic would ease everywhere. Bet the plans are just sitting there waiting for a Council with some spine.
Now I guess I will have to leave town for such thoughts.

Actually it was John West that tried to bring the two sides together , OHT was to convey more than half the lands to the Town for Park ,develop 30 acres for which services and Planning proceedures were provided , it was shortly after, the wheels fell off when the angry NIMBY residents and special interest groups took over and the council of the day ran for cover , the rest is history, Remind you of anything ???

Here's another blank filled in.

If you Google "origins of tor" you should be directed to Glastonbury Tor, a hill at Glastonbury, Somerset, England.

Tor is a local word of Celtic origin meaning "rock outcropping" or "hill."

If you carry through the second paragraph of the article you will discover that there was an Iron Age settlement about 300-200 BC on what was an easily defended island in the fens. Earthworks and Roman remains prove later occupation. The spot seems to have been called YNYS YR AFALON (meaning "The Isle of Avalon") by the Britons, and it is believed by some to be the Avalon of Arthurian legend.

I wonder if there are any legends surrounding our own TOR?

It's good to get away from the drab council crap and explore legends.

Anne Bartley Smith, wife of the late Matthew Smith, a well known developer in the area, refused all attempts to have her property developed.

Further to this point, the Town's outside lawyer, Ms. Kimberly Morris, advised that development of the property would have been problematic for the Town, given that it was held in trust for the benefit of the people of Ontario by the OHF.

The OHF's mandate was to acquire properties of significance for protection. They acquired the whole of HighTor and gave the estate a charitable donation receipt in the amount of approximately $10 million dollars.
Everything indicated that this property was best left undeveloped. The fact that Mayor Jones, Councilor West, Bill Hogg and others decided to advance the development of HighTor with the knowledge of the history of this property is beyond comprehension.

You see, it wasn't about the traffic at all. It was about respecting the will of a generous woman and her final wishes.

As to your point of getting away and exploring legends a quick "origins of tor" search on Goolgle populated the top 2 results fpor me with George Lucas' legendary Star Wars.

Apparently Tor is the acronymm for "The old republic." a component of that fictional worldview.

Science fiction seems to be strong with this search term as Tor.com is a site for science fiction, fantasy, and all the things that interest SF and fantasy readers.
Tor Books publishes the largest SF and fantasy list in the English-speaking world.

Perhaps what might be of most interest to the gelatanous anonymous blob that posts here is that Tor is also short for The Onion Router, a system that enables online anonymity.

You see ,all you need to do is poke the coals and the fire erupts , If anyone actually buys this story about the little old generous lady and her final wishes they are more gullible than Snow White , there it sits neither developed or Park land , A kind of limbo you might say , Kind of like what the Town was in during the previous term of Council, and Oh yes the Towns outside Lawyer was very instrumental , just like the Towns Lawyers who worked on the West Hill applications , we all know how that turned out,
What is beyond comprehension is the fact that some people believe a few politicians threw this off the rails, when all along and to this day it was OHF who refused to get the courts to decide the fate of the Smith Property

Just Googled "Origins of tor" and first item up is Glastonbury Tor.

The others are there also. But who gives a damn anymore about Star Wars when we have economics wars threatening our planet?

Gelatinous is the correct spelling, dummy.

As for the rest of your rather puerile comment you can stick it in the onion router.

Ease off. He does not know how to play. And maybe he has a wee suspicion that some within this ' blob ' may have shorted Facebook coming out of the gate.

Google reflects your interests. Two commenting here have an interest in history. Christopher's tastes are not the same so he was given different material. Both are right. But it is funny that he chose to make a correction to accurate information.

Anon 11:40 has pointed out that search doesn't work the way you think it does.

Which was the point of my comment, not that Google wouldn't also report what you found.

You may want to watch Eli Parsier presentation on filter bubbles, which I posted here:
http://christopherwatts.posterous.com/living-in-bubbles before you start crying over your onions.

As for "economic wars threatening our planet" I fail to see how your Glastonbury Tor speaks to these any more than Start Wars, but hey you seem more procupied with spelling than substance so I assume that is why you don't see the irony in dismissing my comments as puerile one sentance after calling me a dummy.

To Anon 10:17

I fail to see how "going short" on Facebook has any relevence in this thread.

As for "knowing how to play", I suppose being part of the anonymous blob makes you an expert on the subject. Or are you just following Clr. Balard's game book.
