"Cowardice asks the question...is it safe? Expediency asks the question...is it politic? Vanity asks the question...is it popular? But conscience asks the question...is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must take it because it is right." ~Dr. Martin Luther King

Jig-A-Jig....Puzzle Gradually Comes Together

The e-mails Councillors received opened in format. Obviously prepared by someone.

An e-mail list was apparently used for distribution.

The list might have been 2,000. Councillors received three-hundred-and forty, according to the Mayor.

It seemed the majority were from people who did not live in our town..

This morning, after I posted,I received information that may or may not shine a light.

At least part of The Aurora Writers Group morphed into a Regional Writers Group and transferred to the Culture Centre from the Town Hall.

It appears there may be grants and awards available to regional as opposed to local organisations.

So....There's financial advantage to forming regional organisations.

There is  obviously also a need for a place to  establish their regionality.

It  would explain why Aurora Councillors were inundated with e-mails from outside our town to continue funding the culture centre with Aurora taxpayers resources. And advising us what a jewel the centre is in our crown.

It would explain the reason board meetings are conducted in secret. Why the town's Mayor was sworn to secrecy.

We are accommodating a regional multitude

Space designed for the Historical Society was leased immediately to a York Region Arts Group.

That's what makes us THE CENTRE.

There is no other such facility, our supplicants informed us.

They kept repeating the mantra.

Obviously nobody else needs to do it while Aurora has been sucked into providing funds for the whole shebang.

All of it strategically unbeknownst to Council and the community.

Except for the few.

Who were the insiders?

Well, we don't know that either.

But maybe someone else has noticed an inexplicable factor that would make sense under the new revelation.

An explanation of why Council had to be kept in the dark.

Why the Historical Society and the museum had to be kept out of the building.

It doesn't matter who they are. What does matter is that our Mayor and CAO are taking orders from them and whoever they are have never been elected to a position where this is allowed . I question the ethics but will leave wiser heads to have a really good look at who is calling the shots about Aurora's real estate and cash flow. You should only be prepared to grovel if you are prepared to explain why you allowed yourself to be placed in such a situation. Council needs to get off the floor.

Mayor Dawe admitted attending secret meetings during which he had no vote or input and being told he could not report to You, the taxpayers. Tuesday night he mentioned culled e-mails from the ACC and then offered willing to overlook this if it did not occur again.
How many times does he need to be smacked in the head to realize he is being clobbered?
The CAO has been attending meetings and may have had others we know nothing about. He is employed by Aurora and paid very well by Aurora. And he let this thing build without reporting to Council. Utterly mind-boggling!

What is even worse is the Geoff Dawe who has seen Aurora turned inside and out with lawsuits would be so irresponsible as to not heed the solicitor's advice not to attend those clandestine meetings. I expect the group who put together Dawe's flawless run for Mayor must be reeling with shock. I certainly am.
There has been excellent advice offered here to try and put the town on a proper course and end the unsustainable flow of taxpayer dollars to unelected, non-contributing residents of Aurora and other regional towns. But I fear that the actions of a determined few last Tuesday night may have signaled the end to any pretense of common sense and responsibility from Council.
I hope we are not going to have to add another legal mess to our already crowded calendar.

The Aurora Writers Group you mentioned brought back an old memory. There was a woman posting a notice about the organization at what was then the Dominion.
She watched while I read it and asked, " Are you interested in joining? "
I replied that I was a writer and lived in Aurora and could be interested.
"Oh, perhaps we can help you to get published then."
" No, thanks, I have a publisher. "
I waited for the inevitable questions. Usually people want to know what I have written and who my publishers might have been.
Nothing. Her eyes glazed over and she turned back to the bulletin board.
En route to the car I just figured they wanted to mentor fledgling writers and didn't want to waste time on me.
Which was OK with me.
